SCREEN TIME & USE OF DIGITAL MEDIA FOR KIDS

SCREEN TIME & USE OF DIGITAL MEDIA FOR KIDS

Are you aware of new recommendations regarding the amount of screen time and use of digital media for kids? Pediatricians recommend limiting the amount of screen time of children ages 2-5 to no more than 1 hour a day, and advise that what is viewed should be highly-educational and not include advertisements or commercials.

Children 6 and older should engage in 8-12 hours of healthy educational activity, including school, homework, physical activity, and face-to-face social time. After that, digital media can be included, but should be strictly monitored as cyber-bullying, peer-conflicts, and unwanted social peer pressure regarding unsafe behavior and body image go hand in hand with digital media use. Additionally, digital media and technology are recommended to be put away at least two hours before bed to generate restful and recuperative sleep, which is imperative for academic success and positive behavior in school.

Are you reading with your students?
Research shows that children whose parents or guardians read to them every day perform better in school. At Westmore Oaks, our goal is that our students are independent readers by the end of kindergarten. Please help us by reading with your children every night for at least 30 minutes. If you don't have books at home of an appropriate reading level, we encourage you to visit our school library any weekday between 7:30-3:00 PM to check out books for free with the help of our school librarian. Let's work together to ensure our dragons are skilled readers to support academic success!
